LIBERIA: Council Of Churches Says Poor Awareness Caused Low By-Elections Turnout

Flash back: A polling center during one of the just ended by-elections

The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has said the low turnout in the July 29 Montserrado County by-elections was due to inadequate awareness creation by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

According to LCC president, Bishop Kortu Brown, the low participation was mainly experienced in the rural parts of Montserrado County where some polling places recorded only eight votes.

Making the disclosure to the Liberia News Agency on Monday, Bishop Brown said NEC did not carry on enough awareness for the July 29 by-elections and, as such, many people did not vote.

Voters in Montserrado County went to the polls to elect a Senator and Representative in by-elections to replace Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff who died of cancer in Ghana, and Representative Adolph Lawrence killed in a car crash along the Robertsfield highway.

Brown indicated that the NEC needs to work expediently in releasing the results in a timely way to avoid an increase in the ongoing tension and misinformation within the public.

Meanwhile, Bishop Brown said the LCC condemns all forms of violence, including post-election violence, staged by any individuals or group.

He noted that inflammatory remarks made against political actors in the recent by-elections in Montserrado have the propensity to undermine the peace and security of the State, calling on political players to refrain from negative behavior that do not augur well for the democratic process.

He also called on citizens and residents of Liberia to remain peaceful and work towards sustaining the peace that the country now enjoys and for the development and advancement of the country.
