Liberia/China Signed US$5M For Refurbishment, Expansion of LBS Facility

The government of the People’s Republic of China  has  disclosed  its  readiness  to officially  kick  off  phase two  of the refurbishment  of the Liberia  broadcasting (LBS) and its expansion.

Speaking at the signing ceremony which took place at the Liberia Broadcasting  system on the compound  on April  10, 2024, the  Chinese  Ambassador  to  Liberia, Yin Chengu   revealed  that  Chinese   government  will  provide   five  million  united  states  dollars  toward  technical  assistance  moral equipment and relocation  of  the studio include satellite  to improved  LBS facility.

The Chinese ambassador to Liberia, Yin  Chengwu  said  the plan  recently  following  a  closed  -door  meeting   with  Director  General  of the  Liberia  Broadcasting  system,  Eugene L. Fahngon  to achieve a goal  at the LBS.

Amb. Chengwu expressed his government’s readiness to commence phase two of the refurbishment and expansion project at the state-owned LBS.

According  to him, the engineering  team  from  China is expected  to arrive  in the  country  soon  to  begin  the project  officially.

Amb.  Yin  said  the advance  team is  due  in Liberia  soon  to work  out  modalities  with the LBS management on the  commencement  of the project.

Meanwhile,  Ambassador Yin  said  the People’s  Republic  of  China remains  committed  to  supporting  Liberia  and upholding    China –Liberia  relations  as  the one  -China Policy.

He said in 2006, China entered into a technical Assistance Agreement with the government of Liberia, through which LBS’s refurbishment and expansion project phase one stated in November 2007.

In November   2008, China handed over a renovated and fully -equipped LBS Facility to the Liberian government.

The cost  of the LBS  expansion project was  US$ 4 million, its relay  outstations in  Bomi, Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand  Gedeh, Lofa  and  Maryland  counties   were  linked  with  the main  studio  in Monrovia  through  microwave satellite linked expanding  the  station’s coverage to many counties in Liberia.

Also at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive  Officer  of the Liberia  Electricity  Corporation (LEC)  Monie  Ralph  Captan  has disclosed that  the management of   Liberia  Electricity  Corporation  will  increase  the power  supply  to 500 Kilowatts   to  LBS.

He  said the management  of  LBS  can account for the  LEC  in the  countie’s meet  with  full  electricity   for live coverage at all times  in the increase  of the Liberian  people.

For his part, Board Chair of the  LBS, Jerolinmek  Mathew  Piah  expressed delight over China  assistance  to LBS and  for also assisting  the government of Liberia  to adequately  propagate  its program, activities  and achievement  to  the public.

He also  reaffirmed  the government   commitment  to  the one  China  policy, adding  that China  remains  Liberia’s  strategic  partner.

Minister  Piah  told  journalists   that  no  business as usual, we  will continue  to  partner with China  to achieve  the President  Joseph  N. Boakia  rescue  dream, noting  that  China  is  a true  partner to Liberia, he said.

Meanwhile,  the Director  General of LBS, Eugene  L. Fahngon   commended  the  China  government  for their continued  support of the  Liberia  Broadcasting system.

He further  told  the  Chinese  ambassador that all  Chinese programs will be on LBS, after  touring  the facility, the LBS boss  said  the system  really  needs  to be upgraded  to international  standard.

Director General   Fahngon said the Liberia Broadcasting System remains committed to supporting China -Liberia relations and one China policy, he said.
