LIBERIA: Cape Mount District #1 Rep. Supports War Crimes Court

Rep Bob H. Sheriff

ZIME DANDAI,  (LINA) – The Representative of District #1 in Grand Cape Mount County, Bob H. Sheriff, has expressed support for the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

Speaking in Zime Dandai, Porkpa District in Grand Cape Mount County recently, Representative Sheriff said it is time for those who bear the greatest responsibility for the atrocities committed during the 14-year civil war in Liberia to account for their deeds.

According to the Grand Cape Mount County District #1 lawmaker, a War and Economic Crimes Court will provide an opportunity for those accused to either be cleared of the allegation levied against them or be convicted and bear the full weight of the law.

“When you commit crime you are liable to account for it, because we need to get rid of the culture of impunity as a country and as a people,” he stressed.

Sheriff added: “If those responsible of the loss of lives and economic crimes in the country can be made to account for their doings, it will deter others from doing same.”

The representative said he doesn’t whether the court will affect even some of my colleagues, “but we cannot put the interest of our friends above the interest of the state,” he pointed out.

Representative Sheriff, who is one of the main persons behind the bill to set up the crimes court, confirmed that already the bill has passed the required two thirds majority needed for its passage, adding that it will eventually be passed at the lower House.
