The four Opposition collaborating political parties which comprise of Unity Party, Liberty Party, All Liberia Party and the Alternative National Congress, have issued a warning to the CDC-led government and the National Elections Commission against attempts to rig the upcoming Montserrado by-elections.
The parties through a spokesman said, they have been informed about the secret registration of people at NEC headquarters after the deadline for replacement of voters cards have expired.
Mr. Kla Edward Toomey who spoke on behalf of the parties said, buses packed with CDCians were seen at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission and investigation revealed that they were present on the elections authority grounds to register.
“This latest action by the CDC is one of many reasons for the continuous delay in equipping the National Elections Commission to proceed with the conduct of the elections and a part of a grand scheme to rig the election,” Mr. Toomey said.
Mr. Kla Edward Toomey spoke on behalf of the four opposition collaborating political parties and is the spokesman for the Abe Darius Dillon Senatorial Campaign.
The opposition spokesman while speaking further, accused President Weah of intentionally trying to deprive the opposition of a victory, and attributed the President’s recent statement about denying the Dillons and Ureys any electoral victory to his allegations.
Mr. Toomey in a defiant tone added that the four opposition collaborating political parties will resist any and all attempt by the CDC-led government and NEC to rig the elections.
Said Mr. Toomey: “We like to inform the CDC and the NEC that collaboration of the four biggest opposition political parties takes these elections seriously, and we resist any and all attempts and efforts to rob the people of District 15 and Montserrado County at large of the victory and leaders they deserve.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Toomey informed the press that the four collaborating parties will continue to rely on their inside sources in NEC to keep them abreast, and called on their supporters to report information that relates to election rigging. He said, the opposition collaborating parties have information about the relocation of the current registration process to an undisclosed location in Montserrado District 15, but added that they will halt any process regarding registration, even if it takes their parties rallying their supporters in a mass action.
In a related development, the opposition collaborating parties spokesman told reporters that they have received additional information that the Government of Liberia plans to deploy heavily armed police officers around Montserrado on the eve of the election to frighten electorates, and to spark up violence in certain voting precincts. He said, the police plans to forcibly remove ballot boxes and give the CDC the opportunity to stuff ballots after they have initiated some form of violence. Mr. Toomey also told reporters that people will be deployed in the field to bribe opposition poll-watchers.
He did not provide any evidence to his claims.
However, Mr. Kla Toomey called on international partners to carefully follow the ongoing events and make necessary interventions to save Liberia from another electoral violence.
“We can’t afford to pretend not to remember the history of electoral violence in the country and the consequences it has had on our governance process.”
“These elections are a referendum, with a single proposition, that is whether or not our people are happy with the current dismal performance of the CDC-led government, so as to increase its numerical strength at the legislature,” Mr. Toomey said further.
