LIBERIA: 48 Convicts Transferred To Maximum Prison In Zwedru From Bong, Nimba
ZWEDRU, Aug. 21 (LINA) – The 9th and 8th Judicial Circuit Courts in Gbarnga, Bong County, and Sanniquellie, Nimba County have transferred at least 48 convicts to the National Palace of Corrections (NPC) located on the outskirts of Grand Gedeh’s capital, Zwedru.
At the different courts, the convicts have been found guilty on charges such as burglary, rape, murder and manslaughter.
Grand Gedeh County Attorney Isaac Williams said the convicts were criminals taken in at the maximum prison on August 20, where they will continue their varied jail terms.
All adjudged to spend more than 5 years in jail have already served parts of their sentences at the previous cells in Gbarnga and Sanniquellie, Atty. Williams told the Liberia News Agency.
In the meantime, the NPC Director Flomo Johnson has said there was no juvenile among the transferred criminals, adding: “They are all adults and males.”
He further stated that the welfare of the prisoners at the Palace, including feeding, is something fair enough.
Director Johnson also said: “Negotiations have been made with the Martha Tubman Hospital in Zwedru to continuously provide medical treatment for the inmates from time to time.”
The NPC facility has 276 prison cells partitioned into wards for female, juvenile and other convicts according to the degree of the crime a person committed to be imprisoned.
