The 54th Legislature, under the stewardship of Dr. Bhofal Chambers, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will receive in the country, a high level delegation of parliamentarians from the People’s Republic of China Parliament, known as the National People’s Congress.
The Chinese Embassy near Monrovia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has forwarded the tentative schedules to House Speaker, Hon. Dr. Bhofal Chambers, on the arrival and engagements of the High Level Chinese Parliament’s Delegation.
The Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) is the equivalent of the Legislature, as the case with Liberia. It is the highest organ of state power and the national legislature of the People’s Republic of China. With 2,980 members in 2018, it is the largest parliamentary body in the world.
The delegation will be headed by China’s NPC Vice Chairman on the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, H. E. WU Weihua, and will consist of more than 16 members.
The aims of the visit are bordered on the cooperation of the Liberian Legislature and the Chinese Parliament. It will also focus on the exchange of views, parliamentary rudiments and a possible signing of cooperation document as a blueprint to build on the counts of the existing cordial relationships between the two lawmaking bodies.
Recently, the United States Congressional Delegation paid a two day working visit to Liberia as guest of the 54th Legislature. The US Congressional Delegation visited the Liberian Legislature under the Congress’ House Democracy Partnership program which scouts cooperation with parliaments, congresses, legislature from around the world. Congressman, Rep. David Price of North Carolina, led the delegation. Rep. Price stated, during their visit that the United States Congress intends to increase their engagements with the Liberian Legislature on knowledge sharing and reciprocal visitations between the two bodies under the US Congress’ House Democracy Partnership (HDP).
Some members of the US Congress and support staff from Washington DC traveling along with the delegation, held separate break-up sessions with some departmental and sessional heads of Liberia’s 54th Legislature, including the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, the Senate Secretariat, Public Account Committee, the Legislative Budget Office, Senate Ways and Means Committee, amongst others
