The founder and financier of the Liberia Diabetes Center in Monrovia has disclosed that a consignment of diabetes supplies will be arriving in the country to meet the growing need of diabetes sufferers.
Mr. James Momoh made the statement during an interview with our reporter from the United States. Momoh said the shortage of diabetes supplies at the Liberia Diabetes Center over the last three months was a result of the covid-19 outbreak that affected the movement of goods and services globally.
” Diabetes supplies should be arriving in the country in August” Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) about 19.4 million adults aged 20-79 are presently living with diabetes in Sub- Saharan Africa.
Momoh told our reporter that diabetes is now a pandemic in Liberia that claiming the lives of the innocent due to the lack of awareness on the disease management, prevention, and treatment. “The first step to fighting diabetes is getting tested and knowing your hyperglycemic level”.
I want to encourage ever Liberian to get tested. It will reduce the premature death of our citizens due to diabetes related complications” Momoh told our reporter that the pending arrival of diabetes supplies will further reduce the financial burden of people suffering from diabetes in the country since the services provided at the Liberia Diabetes Center are relatively free and affordable.
Momoh disclosed that the Liberia Diabetes Center will also be providing relief for people living with high blood pressure through a memorandum of understanding recently signed between the Liberia Diabetes Center and Ultralife, a company that specializes in blood pressure treatment and support.
“You cannot treat diabetes without blood pressure, most people suffering from diabetes are also dealing with the condition of high blood pressure” On the activities of the Liberia Diabetes Center in the country, he disclosed that covid-19 greatly affected the center activities in meeting the needs of thousands of Liberians that are living with diabetes.
He admonished Liberians to get tested for diabetes if they are experiencing the following signs and symptoms. Excessive thirst and hunger, frequent urination, vaginal yeast infection, poor vision, impotency, edema of the foot, weight loss and a wound that is difficult to heal. ” If you are having these symptoms, please check your sugar level”
