Dozens of residents mostly youths of the township of Caldwell in Montserrado County yesterday, February 19, 2018 blocked the major road in the area leaving motorists stranded, chanted ‘solidarity songs’ in unison as they created a traffic gridlock that lasted all day Monday.
This chaotic situation made the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) of the Liberia National Police to move in, in a bid of putting the situation under control, while at the same time calling for a roundtable discussion between the leadership of the protesters and the management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
As a result of the hour-long protest in the area, commercial activities were also paralyzed with the protesters accusing the former ruling Unity Party government of not responding to their complaints over the years.
The road through Caldwell is one of the main economic hubs of the government, because it connects the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) and Mount Coffee Hydro in Louisiana with Monrovia.
With the intervention of the Liberia National Police headed by the newly confirmed Police Chief Patrick Sudue, the situation was placed under control.
