In U.S. Liberians Stage Big Demonstration Today, Opting For Approval Of War Crimes Court
Thousands of Liberians residing in the United States have resolved to state a mass demonstration in Washington D.C. aimed at mounting pressure for the establishment of War Crimes Court in Liberia.
According to report, the demonstration which is expected draw Liberians across the United States is being organized the International Justice Group (IJG), the Movement for Justice in Liberia (MJL), and other Advocacy groups in the United States are said to be doing all for the success of today’s demonstration.
In 2018, a U.S. lawmaker, David Donovan introduced a Resolution, H.R. 1055 to the House of Representative.
The Republican which called for the establishment of an Extraordinary Criminal Tribunal for Liberia was unanimously passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, November 14, 2018.
According to the U.S. Congressman, the intent of the Resolution which was drafted by the IJG and sponsored by Representative Donovan, was to affirmed strong United States-Liberia, support for the democratic principles and for the full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendation, which includes the establishment of an Extraordinary Criminal Tribunal for Liberia. The Resolution has since been sent to the Senate for approval.
According to report, the primary objective of today’s demonstration in Washington, March 20, 2019 is to force the United States Government to concur with the House of Representatives on Resolution HR1055.
Once the U.S. Senate concurs with the House of Representatives, it becomes law, and same is forced on the Liberian Government of President George Manneh Weah to implement.
The IJG, along with the MJL and thousands of Liberians have agreed today to march on Washington and also highlight sanctions on current and former officials of the Liberian Government to account for the missing Liberian dollars.
Meanwhile, the International Justice Group (IJG) and the Movement for Justice in Liberia are calling on all Liberians to join the protest.
The IJG economic crimes investigators, Garretson Al Smith and others, will hold discussion at the United States Capitol for the full implementation of the TRC reports and for the establishment of a Special Tribunal for Liberia.
