In India: Surgery helps Liberian walk without pain after 10 years

A 20-year-old Liberian nursing student, who had difficulty in walking since the age of seven, was diagnosed with end-stage Arthritis and worn out joints. The local doctors back in Liberia were unable to diagnose her medical condition.
Members of the local church helped Nuiker Varteikai, to get treatment from Mumbai based hospital. While she underwent right hip and left knee replacement, in a single sitting, she can now walk limping after more than 10 years. Varteikai, experienced constant pain in her hips and knees. While she was given tablets by the local doctors, but to her dismay, they were unable to find the right diagnosis.
Around four weeks ago, she was evaluated by the doctors at Fortis Hospital, where she was diagnosed with end-stage arthritis and worn out joints. Dr Sachin Bhonsle, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, said, “She underwent a right hip and left knee replacement with high-quality ceramic coated prosthetic joints. Before she came for the treatment, she was partially disabled.” Post-op her physiotherapy sessions commenced and she was discharged from the hospital within a week.
