The Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Education Mariamu Fofana says ArcelorMittal Liberia has demonstrated strong corporate social responsibility values with the launch of a new education initiative known as the Community Scholarship Program.
Representative Fofana spoke Tuesday, June 7 in Buchanan during the official launch of the Community Scholarship Program by ArcelorMittal Liberia.
Honorable Fofana said the scholarship program will create opportunities for the underprivileged and called for the application process to be well publicized and transparent.
She commended ArcelorMittal Liberia for supporting the education and training of Liberian youth.
“This is a milestone achievement in the history of ArcelorMittal Liberia and on behalf of the Legislature,
I’ll like to congratulate the company and say thanks for the many contributions it has made in the communities since the beginning of its operations in Liberia.
Representative Fofana emphasized that the national Legislature remains a strong partner to ArcelorMittal Libera and is not against the interest of the company.
“As members of the Legislature, we are pleased to know that ArcelorMittal Liberia is listening to the call of the Liberian people. We want ArcelorMittal Liberia to know that they have partners in the National Legislature. We are not against your concession.”
The Lofa County lawmaker encouraged authorities of Bong, Nimba, and Grand Bassa Counties to embrace and utilize the many opportunities and financial contributions from ArcelorMittal Liberia.
She said unlike Bong, Nimba, and Grand Bassa Counties which receive huge County Social Development Fund contributions annually from ArcelorMittal Liberia, Lofa County does not have a major concessionaire and lacks such opportunity.
Tuesday’s launch of the Community Scholarship Program was well-attended by authorities of the three counties including, Superintendent Nelson Korquio of Nimba, Superintendent Esther Walker of Bong County, and the County Education Officers of the three counties, amongst others.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Liberia Joep Coenen has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in communities and programs to develop the skills and potentials of Liberians.
CEO Coenen said the launch of the Community Scholarship Program further demonstrates the level of support and commitment of ArcelorMittal Liberia towards education and training.
He named other transformative AML supported education and training programs like the Young Professionals Program, the foreign Advanced Academic Scholarship Program, and the ArcelorMittal Liberia Training Academy in Yekepa as complimentary of the Community Scholarship Program.
The Community Scholarship Program is targeting Twelfth graders and students at accredited public colleges and specialized tertiary educational institutions in Bong, Grand Bassa, and Nimba Counties.
The Program will award 100% of all annual scholarships to eligible students majoring in the Sciences and Maths-related fields who are resident in cities, towns, and villages in the immediate operational areas of ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML).
The Community Scholarship Program will provide full tuition and fees for college students. High school seniors will receive tuition and fees and one set of textbooks prescribed by the Ministry of Education.
