(LINA) – The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the Management of DHL courier service for its refusal to accept the Liberian currency in business transaction.
The entity is said to have refused Liberian currency in the amount of L$57,505.00, intended to expedite important documents for the Government of Liberia to be filed at the ECOWAS Court in Nigeria.
The Writ of Summons issued by the Monrovia City Court, stated: “You are hereby commanded to summon the Management of DHL by and thru its authorized officer, defendant, and cause it to appear before the Stipendiary Magistrate to answer to the charges of economic sabotage, and physical obstruction of government function.”
The writ pointed out that the action of DHL is not only sabotage to the operations of the Government of Liberia, but also obstructs the functions of the government as a whole.
Following the writ of summons issued against the company, its representatives were placed on the holding bench, awaiting the Magistrate to look into the matter.
The Solicitor General Cllr. Daku Mulbah held a press conference Thursday on the DHL’s refusal to accept the Liberian currency paid by the government, adding that such action on the part of of the company is “unlawful, wicked” and in violation of section 12.1 of the new penal law of Liberia.
Cllr. Mulbah stated that the Liberian dollar is the country’s legal tender that no entity doing business under the laws of Liberia should reject.
He pointed out that because of their refusal to accept the Liberian currency, the government of Liberia thru the Ministry of Justice will make sure that DHL is prosecuted for its action.
He indicated that such action has the tendency to make the ECOWAS Court to render a judgment by default in the government’s case.
