Reports say a traditional group in Johnny Town, Numopoh Kpanyan District, Sinoe County has beaten a 22 year-old school girl to death for alleged witchcraft activity leading to the death of a one-year-old child.

According to the reports, after her “confession,” the girl was beaten mercilessly by the traditional group, resulting to her death at a hospital in Greenville where she was undergoing treatment.

Days after the act, the dead body of the 22-year-old identified as Willet Nyanwilah was discovered during a joint security search in the district.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in Greenville, Sinoe County Attorney, Cllr. J. Aldophus Kanuah, said authorities have arrested 22 persons as suspects in the alleged ritualistic killing of the girl.

He disclosed that some suspects are still on the run, and named them as David Gbeh Solo, head of the traditional group; Green Namely, Anthony Kumeh, Sylvester Charteh and Alex Karpeh, among others.

The Sinoe County Attorney explained that Liberia is a country of laws and, as such, no violation of the law will go unpunished, assuring the citizenry of Sinoe County that those involved when investigated, tried and found guilty will face the full weight of the law.

He pointed out that cases that are criminal in nature are not to be handled by traditional leaders but sent to the appropriate civil authorities for investigation.

The County Attorney added that the constant habitat of traditional groups responding to such issues or hindering justice has to stop.

“If it will cause the National traditional head to visit Sinoe then it will happen because the traditional group intercepting cases that are to be sent to court should be put to an end,”
