City, Nation Observe Day of Mourning for Former President George HW Bush

WASHINGTON – Wednesday is a national day of mourning former President George H.W. Bush as his funeral takes place in the nation’s capital.

Bush’s casket has been lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda since Monday.

A funeral service is taking place at the National Cathedral.

After the service, Bush’s body will be flown back to Texas where a second funeral will be held on Thursday.

Bush will then be buried on the grounds of his presidential library at Texas A&M University.

Former Senator Bob Dole was among those who paid respects to Bush on Tuesday.

He was helped out of his wheelchair to stand and salute the casket.

Dole and Bush both fought in World War II and ran against each other for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988.

President Donald Trump is attending Wednesday’s service, along with the other four living ex-presidents.

A number of world leaders will also be there, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prince Charles.

Bush died last Friday at the age of 94.

Since Wednesday is a national day of mourning, regular postal service has been suspended.

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are also closed for the day.
