The government of Burkina Faso officially demanded the departure of French troops stationed in the country within a month.

Burkina Faso’s official news agency said the government on Jan 18 suspended a 2018 military accord that allowed the presence of French troops in the country.

It added that France had a month to pull its troops from Burkina Faso.

According to a source close to the government, the authorities demanded “the speedy withdrawal of French soldiers.”

“This is not a break in relations with France. The notice concerns only agreements on military cooperation,” the source added.

Several demonstrations have recently taken place in Ouagadougou demanding the withdrawal of France from the Sahelian country, which hosts a contingent of nearly 400 French special forces.
