A member of the Liberian Senate has submitted a Bill to encourage breastfeeding for babies has been submitted at the Liberian Senate aimed discouraging babies milk being imported in the country.
The Bill was submitted by Senator Peter Coleman, Chairman of Health at the Liberian Senate, noting that there is a need to discourage the marketing of imported milk in the country.
He said breast feeding play a vital role in the growth of infants and neutralizing the inability of babies not growing properly, breastfeeding help the child to grow healthily and improve their daily diet.
Dr. Coleman spoke on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 during a workshop held for members of the legislators at the Capitol Building on the important of breastfeeding, and to discourage the marketing of baby milk.
Breastfeeding, also known as nursing, is the feeding of babies and young children with milk from a woman’s breast, health professionals recommend that breastfeeding begin within the first hour of a baby’s life and continue as often and as much as the baby wants.
According to report, deaths of an estimated 820,000 children under the age of five could be prevented globally every year with increased breastfeeding; breastfeeding decreases the risk of respiratory tract infections and diarrhea, both in developing and developed countries.
Other benefits include lower risks of asthma, food allergies, and type 1 diabetes, it may also improve cognitive development and decrease the risk of obesity in adulthood.[2] Mothers may feel pressure to breastfeed, but in the developed world children generally grow up normally when bottle fed.
