Women around the world on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 colorfully celebrated the International Women’s Day (IWD) in their numbers with Liberian women been no exception by joining their colleagues in the celebration of this historic day.
The United Nations in 1975 officially recognized International Women’s Day the radical origins of this day actually trace back to 1908, during the New York City garment workers’ strike. This way was inspired by American labor activists, German delegate Clara Zetkin and others who readily proposed this day in honor of women who play significantly their role respectively.
Here in Liberia, dozens of women from all sector of the society gathered to their respective places to honorably celebrate this day with theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, and call for climate action for women worldwide.

Madam Clar Marie Weah is Liberia’s, First Lady; since her ascendancy as the country’s first lady, Madam Weah has been involved in promoting women and young girls activities
In 2018, the Liberian First Lady founded “Clar Hope Foundation”, a non-political initiative, aimed at creating an equitable society in Liberia, by restoring the hope of disadvantaged children, youth and women through education, health and other opportunities to better their lives.
Sister Mary Laurene Browne; what is so amazing about Sister Mary Laurene Browne is her passion to for education for the nation’s youths, and many contributions to the sustenance last peace in Liberia, and has contributed immensely to the education of hundreds of Liberians both at home and abroad.
Her quest for the establishment of several academic institutions to mode the minds of Liberia’s younger generation has been graded and commended by Liberians who believes in her passion of molding minds of Liberia’s future leaders in their quest to grab sound education.
Madam Mary T. Broh; is one of Liberia’s productive women, who has made her marks over the years bringing glory to Africa’s oldest cities when she served as Mayor under the regime of the former Liberian leader, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, she made sure that the city of Monrovia was always cleaned, considered by many as ‘workaholic’ was always admired for her work.
Matilda Wokie Parker; is one of those Liberian women who has over the years contributed immensely to the growth and development of our beloved country, Liberia, especially when she served as Managing Director of the National Port Authority (NPA) during the reign of Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as President of Liberia.
‘Wokie’ as she is affectionately call, humanitarian contributions to the less privileged Liberians over the years without border has indeed proven that indeed she is a true mother for all motherless children; her holistic guidance still rings bell in the ears of many Liberians who have considered as a true woman of virtue.
Dr. Eugenia Wiyata Burphy; a US based Liberian humanitarian who is also President of Liberians Advocacy For Change in the Americas, her numerous contributions to the sustenance of peace in Liberia has won her many accolades, noting in one of her speeches, Dr. Burphay said ‘ Dual citizenship is very crucial to the rebuilding process of Liberia and maintaining our identity as people of substance. I hold this dear to my heart as I look at other African nations that had gone through similar problems as we did 1980 – 1990 has gravitated to their people in the diaspora for help by making the path easy for returning to their homeland.

Juli Endee; Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador is one of those women who has made her mark in preaching the messages of reconciliation amongst Liberia. As Cultural Ambassador, Juli Endee has over the years played her part as one of those women on the frontline to spread the messages of peace and reconciliation through songs and dramas; her countless contributions has won the hearts of many Liberians who graded her a patriotic Liberians making sure that Liberians keep the peace that they have been yearning for.
Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr; Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has been playing her role by making sure that the interest of women and children are indeed protected in accordance to the laws of Liberia.
Asatu Bah-Kenneth, Deputy Commissioner General Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) has always been on the front line making sure that Liberians enjoying the lasting peace they have been looking for after nearly fifteen years of bloody civil war that took the lives of over 250,000 lives, million dollars of properties damaged. Her voices are always heard generating peace and security amongst Liberians and their boarders. Her immense contribution towards to growth and development of Liberia has been widely noticed by Liberians who have lauded her for professional stance.
Other committed Liberian women whose names are not included on this list have done their services well to Liberia and its people, and they are also appreciated for their numerous contributions over years; those market women and others must be commended for their nationalistic role in Liberia. Once again congratulations to our women as they celebrate the 2022 International Women’s Day.
