Recently your informative global news outlet, the GNN-Liberia and other media outlet, the Smart News Liberia uncovered what is considered as the biggest bribery syndicate in the history of the ruling CDC on an alleged solicitation of a Five Million United States Dollars bribe allegedly by the Coordinator of all Presidential Projects, Madam Makanneh Keaita, some Liberians who took keen interest in the story are wondering as to where is the role of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), amid President Weah’s committee recently set up.
Based on the report by these two media outlets, the Liberian leader, President George Manneh Weeah according to the Executive Mansion website suspended with immediate effect Madam Makenneh L. Keita, the Coordinator of all Presidential Special Projects.
Madam Keita was suspended on Monday August 23, 2021, for allegedly soliciting Five Million United States Dollars (US$5M0 from two South African investors from the Imperial Investment Limited who came into the country to explore investment opportunities.
Accordingly, Madam Makenneh Keita is meanwhile asked to report to the office of the legal Advisor to the President for investigation. Meanwhile, the Liberian leader has reiterated his instruction to all government officials to act in conformity with the laws of Liberia, and further warned would-be investors to work directly with the National Investment Commission (NIC) if they desire to invest in the country, the Executive Mansion page said.
However, some Liberians who spoke to the GNN are wondering as to why Madam Keita cannot be turned over to the LACC for further interrogation in regard to the reported solicitation of bribe in the tune of Five Million United States Dollars from foreign investors, and also to compel her identify those believed to be her collaborators in the crime.
The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission is a national autonomous commission with mandate to create awareness, investigate, and prosecute acts of corruption involving public officials and resources.
The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) was established by an Act of Legislature on August 28, 2008 with the mandate to investigate and prosecute acts of corruption, as well as educate the public about the ills of corruption and the benefits of its eradication. The Commission is made of five commissioners, one of whom is the Executive Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission. The Secretariat is comprised of four program divisions: Education & Prevention Division, Investigation & Enforcement Division, Legal & Prosecution Division and Administration Division, and is headed by an Executive Director, while the program divisions are headed by program managers.
