Unity Party Defends Boakai Administration, Calls For Swift Probe into US$19 Million Drug Seizure

By Amos Harris

Monrovia — The ruling Unity Party has strongly defended the performance of the Boakai administration while calling for the speedy conclusion of investigations into the recent seizure of suspected narcotics valued at nearly US$19 million at Roberts International Airport. Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Broad Street on Friday, July 10, 2026, National Chairman Rev. Dr. Luther Tarpeh stated that the government remains deeply committed to transparency, accountability, and protecting the interests of the Liberian people. He maintained that the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai continues to make steady progress in addressing key national challenges.

Commenting on the ongoing drug investigation, the Unity Party described the interception of the suspected cocaine shipment as clear evidence that Liberia’s security institutions are becoming more effective in combating transnational organized crime. The party highly praised the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), the Joint Security, and other state institutions for their swift role in intercepting the shipment. Party leadership insisted that everyone connected to the case will be thoroughly investigated regardless of political affiliation, financial status, or social influence, stressing that there will be “no sacred cows” as Liberia works with international partners to combat narcotics trafficking and money laundering.

While commending the security agencies, the Unity Party urged the Joint National Security Investigation Team to expedite its work, warning that unnecessary delays could weaken public confidence in the justice system. Party officials emphasized that Liberians deserve timely answers and that anyone found responsible must face the full weight of the law.

Beyond the drug investigation, the party praised the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning for commencing salary payments to civil servants early on July 2, 2026. According to the party, this timely disbursement reflects improved fiscal discipline, strengthens household incomes, stimulates local economic activity, and boosts overall public confidence in the government. The Unity Party also commended the government’s proactive management of the petroleum sector, noting that despite tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in global oil markets, Liberia has successfully maintained a stable fuel supply while implementing measures that have lowered pump prices.

On the infrastructure front, the party applauded President Boakai for breaking ground on the proposed four-lane highway connecting the Gabriel Tucker Bridge, the St. Paul Bridge, and Bo Waterside. The major project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, facilitate regional trade, and support broader economic growth. The party further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in young people and expanding development initiatives aimed at creating better opportunities for future generations.

However, in a notable appeal to President Boakai, the ruling party called for a strategic cabinet reshuffle, arguing that some ministers and heads of government agencies have not performed up to expectations. Party leadership stated that formal recommendations would be submitted to the President, urging the replacement of underperforming officials to improve public service delivery. The Unity Party concluded by pledging to continue supporting the government’s achievements while openly identifying areas requiring improvement, insisting that the administration remains fully committed to delivering meaningful results for the Liberian people.
