UL Family Celebrates Dr. Amos C. Sawyer

Fendall Campus, Monrovia – June 8, 2026 – Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Liberia gathered at the Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge on the Fendall Campus on Friday, June 8, 2026, to celebrate the life and enduring legacy of the late Dr. Amos C. Sawyer during the Dr. Amos C. Sawyer Academic Lecture Series.

The academic forum, hosted by the Amos C. Sawyer College Student Association in collaboration with the college’s administrative team, served as a platform to honor Dr. Sawyer’s remarkable contributions as an educator, political scientist, statesman, and champion of democratic governance in Liberia.

Outstanding students from various colleges, including the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the College of Engineering, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Agriculture and Forestry, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Education, demonstrated exceptional academic excellence through presentations and intellectual engagements. Their performances highlighted the depth of talent and promise among Liberia’s future leaders and scholars.

The event featured thought-provoking discussions and scholarly presentations that inspired attendees and filled the university community with pride. Organizers extended heartfelt appreciation to all participating students for their dedication, intellectual contributions, and commitment to academic excellence.

Delivering the keynote address was Prof. Dr. D. Elliott Wreh-Wilson, whose insightful presentation captivated students, faculty members, staff, and guests. He reflected on the life, vision, work, and lasting contributions of Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, emphasizing the values of education, leadership, and peaceful dialogue that defined the late statesman’s legacy.

Amid enthusiastic applause from the audience, Dr. Wreh-Wilson also addressed the ongoing protests and disruptions affecting normal academic activities at the university. He encouraged students to pursue peaceful and constructive means of resolving grievances and concerns, reminding them that Dr. Sawyer consistently advocated for dialogue, understanding, and nonviolent approaches to addressing challenges.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and his unwavering support for student development and academic excellence, the Amos C. Sawyer College Student Association honored Dr. Wreh-Wilson with a ceremonial gown and certificate of appreciation.

The honor included a detailed citation recognizing the professor’s academic brilliance, scholarly achievements, and steadfast commitment to mentoring and empowering students at the University of Liberia.

The successful lecture series not only celebrated the enduring legacy of Dr. Amos C. Sawyer but also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, intellectual engagement, and the promotion of peaceful leadership among future generations.
