Senate Addresses Police-Military Clash, Secures Commitment to Joint Security Efforts

The Senate Committee on National Defense, Security and Veterans Affairs, led by Lofa County Senator Momo Cyrus, convened an emergency hearing on Thursday, February 27, 2025, to address a violent clash between the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL)—the incident, which occurred on S.D. Cooper Road on Wednesday, triggered widespread panic among Liberians and foreign residents.

The hearing aimed to ascertain the root cause of the confrontation and prevent future occurrences. Inspector General of Police Col. Gregory Coleman represented the LNP, while Chief of Staff David Forley represented the AFL. Both officials appeared before the committee and other senators in the main chamber of the Liberian Senate.

The day-long hearing involved detailed accounts from both sides regarding the misunderstanding, which resulted in serious injuries to several police officers requiring hospitalization. After hours of deliberation, Senator Cyrus announced that both the LNP and the AFL expressed regret for their actions and pledged to cultivate a collaborative working relationship moving forward.

“Both the Liberia National Police and the Armed Forces of Liberia regretted their actions and vowed to work in partnership moving forward,” Senator Cyrus stated.

To solidify this renewed spirit of cooperation, the AFL committed to assisting the LNP in enforcing the recently implemented “NO GO zone” restrictions on motorcyclists in Monrovia and its surrounding areas. This joint effort underscores the commitment of both agencies to ensuring the peace and security of Liberia.
