Our Friends in the News Media:
Good afternoon!
Today is a great day for the people of Bopolu. It is a day of progress, fulfillment, and, most importantly, the beginning of a healthier and better life for our people.
Water is life. It is one of the most essential needs of any community. Yet, since the founding of Bopolu City, the people here have never had a pipe-borne water supply system.
For decades, men, women, and children have woken up at odd hours, walked long distances, and endured unsafe conditions just to fetch water. This is typical of our rural communities, a situation we must change. Too often, they have relied on hand pumps, creeks, and wells—some of which were not always safe for drinking.
As a result, families have suffered from waterborne diseases, costing them money that could have been used for food, education, or business opportunities.
This should not be the reality in a country that is moving forward. This is why, as part of our ARREST Agenda, we committed to transforming our county capital from reliance on hand pumps to modern pipe-borne water systems. This people-driven Agenda holds firmly that access to clean and safe drinking water is not a privilege—it is a basic right that every Liberian deserves.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is in this spirit that we have gathered here today—to celebrate the completion of the Bopolu Mini-Water Supply System, a project undertaken by the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC). This system is the first of its kind in Bopolu, and while it may not yet cover the entire city, it is a major step toward that goal.
Even more pleasing to me is that the installation of this water system is fully funded by the Liberian Government. Homes and businesses within the pipe network range can now register with the LWSC and get connected to clean and safe drinking water.
The benefits of this project go beyond mere convenience. It goes even further in helping significantly reduce the time and physical effort spent fetching water, allowing our women and children to focus on more productive activities. Most importantly, it will help prevent the spread of deadly waterborne diseases, ensuring a healthier community thereby reducing medical expenses for families.
Let me take this moment to extend my profound appreciation to the Management and Staff of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation for their leadership in making this Project a reality.
I also want to recognize the County Administration and the Legislative Caucus of Gbarpolu County for their support and commitment to improving the lives of our people. This is what leadership is about—working together to bring real solutions to our communities.
As we dedicate this water supply system today, I assure you that this is just the beginning. We will continue to work toward expanding access to clean water, not just in Bopolu but in every county across Liberia. As a matter of fact, we have a lot in our plan to improve the infrastructure and health of the Bopolu and Gbarpolu citizens.
Our Administration remains committed to ensuring that safe drinking water and improved sanitation become the standard for all Liberians, regardless of where they live. This is a testament to our long-standing commitment to decentralization, with the devolution of powers and services to all segments of our society.
To the people of Bopolu, this water system is yours. Protect it and take care of it. Use it wisely. There is a prevailing perception that we are very poor at maintenance. Help us to shatter such ugly representation. Help make this durable by scrupulously upholding its maintenance regimen. I trust you will, and you will extract from the fullest of benefits.
Together, we will continue to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Liberia.
Thank you, and may God bless Liberia!
