WASHINGTON, D.C., USA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., held high-level discussions today with United States Senator Angela D. Alsobrooks of the State of Maryland in the U.S. Capital, Washington, D.C. The talks focused on expanding economic, educational, and institutional cooperation between Liberia and the United States.
A major priority of the meeting was translating the historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Liberia and the State of Maryland in June 2026 into tangible outcomes. The agreement, previously announced by the Maryland Governor’s Office and the Embassy of Liberia in Washington, establishes a broad framework for collaboration in trade, investment, education, workforce development, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, tourism, public administration, and cultural exchange.
President Boakai emphasized the importance of transitioning the bilateral agreement from paper to practical implementation. He stressed that execution must focus on creating jobs, upgrading technical skills, and broadening economic opportunities for Liberians. Additionally, the President outlined his administration’s core policy pillars, emphasizing democratic governance, national peace and security, economic transformation, human capital development, and increased private-sector investment.
The session explored actionable avenues for direct collaboration between Liberian agencies and Maryland-based institutions, with a strong focus on higher education, vocational training, agricultural innovation, infrastructure, and technology. Both leaders also affirmed the deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people connections that bind Liberia and the State of Maryland.
Senator Alsobrooks welcomed the partnership and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting its long-term objectives. Her backing is expected to drive momentum for the agreement and foster stronger ties between Liberia, Maryland public institutions, and the private sector. Senator Alsobrooks was elected to the United States Senate in 2024 following her tenure as County Executive of Prince George’s County, bringing a public service background spanning education, healthcare, economic development, public safety, and community empowerment.
President Boakai was joined in the delegation by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti; Minister Without Portfolio Hadja Mamaka Bility; National Security Advisor Samuel Kofi Woods; Director General of the Cabinet Nathaniel T. Kwabo; Liberian Ambassador to the United States Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh; and Executive Assistant to the President Morie Nemah, alongside other government officials.
