President Boakai Joins African Leaders in Addis Ababa for 39th African Union Assembly

MONROVIA — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., departed Monrovia on Thursday, February 12, 2026, leading a high-level Liberian delegation to the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union. Held in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the summit is scheduled for February 14–15 and represents a significant moment for Liberia’s continued engagement in continental diplomacy and regional integration.

The summit officially convenes at the Nelson Mandela Hall within the Addis International Convention Center, following a state dinner hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. African leaders will gather to deliberate on a wide range of critical priorities, including continental peace and security, institutional reforms within the AU, and Africa’s growing participation in the G20. Discussions will also center on the progress of Agenda 2063, food security under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, climate action, and the expansion of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

A central pillar of this year’s assembly is the theme of “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” This focus is particularly relevant to Liberia’s domestic development agenda, and the President is expected to engage in bilateral talks with fellow heads of state and international partners to discuss water infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, and peacebuilding efforts.

President Boakai is accompanied on this mission by an influential delegation that includes First Lady Mrs. Kartuma Y. Boakai, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and Minister of State Without Portfolio Mamaka Bility. The delegation also features technical expertise from Deputy Minister for Fiscal Affairs Anthony S. Myers, Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto, and the Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, Mohammed Ali, highlighting the administration’s focus on the summit’s primary theme of sanitation and sustainable resources.

While the President is away, Minister of Justice Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh will chair the Cabinet in consultation with the Vice President, maintaining regular communication with President Boakai via telephone. The Executive Mansion has committed to providing regular updates on the outcomes of the summit and the various diplomatic engagements undertaken by the Liberian team. President Boakai and his delegation are expected to return to Monrovia on February 16, 2026, following the conclusion of the high-level sessions.
