HARPER, Maryland County — The search for missing fisherman Papa Abraham Stemn ended in tragedy after his body was discovered on Sea Breeze Beach in Harper, days after he reportedly disappeared following a canoe-capsizing incident near the Richard Sea-Port.
Stemn was reported missing after traveling from Nekambo with 20-year-old Bishop Toe to go fishing. According to a preliminary police report, their canoe overturned when rough seas, strong waves, and heavy currents overwhelmed the two fishermen. Toe survived the incident and managed to swim to the shoreline, but Stemn disappeared beneath the water and could not be located immediately.
The recovery of Stemn’s body at Sea Breeze Beach has triggered a full police investigation into the events between the capsizing and the discovery of his remains. Law enforcement officers responded to the scene, and health practitioners performed an initial examination before relatives officially identified the body. Preliminary observations noted questions regarding the body’s condition and visible injuries, though medical authorities have not yet officially established the precise cause or manner of death.
The discovery comes following days of heightened public concern and community tension in Harper. Before the body was found, more than 50 women gathered at the Maryland County Administration Building demanding answers from local authorities and calling for intensified search efforts.
Family members have since raised allegations of possible foul play, with some referencing local traditional and spiritual practices. Relatives noted that a traditional practitioner had previously assured them Stemn would return home alive within two days—an expectation shattered by the discovery on the beach. Additional claims made by relatives alleging spiritual involvement by Stemn’s mother remain unverified by police or medical personnel and lack credible evidence.
With the recovery complete, law enforcement focus has shifted from a missing-persons case to determining whether Stemn’s death was purely a tragic drowning accident or involved foul play. Authorities are expected to reconstruct the timeline, analyze forensic evidence, and release a transparent, evidence-based account of their findings, while urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified accusations that could impede the ongoing investigation.
