MONROVIA—The Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Gregory Coleman, has commended the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) for its “disciplined and mature” response during the recent eviction and demolition of the party’s national headquarters in Congo Town.
In a statement released on Sunday, IG Coleman praised the CDC for respecting the rule of law despite the party’s deep emotional and historical connection to the property.
“Your respect for the rule of law, despite the strong sentiments of value and history attached to the property, reflects a maturity that strengthens Liberia’s democracy,” Coleman stated, calling the event a milestone for the country’s democratic journey.
The police chief noted that the eviction was a test of both the CDC’s leadership and the resilience of the nation’s democracy. He stressed that the peaceful acceptance of court orders by a major political party sets a powerful example for all Liberians.
Coleman further assured the public of the LNP’s neutrality and professionalism, affirming that the police will continue to protect the rights and dignity of every citizen. He also commended the Joint Security and court officers for their professional conduct during the exercise.
“This is a lesson for all of us that Liberia can only move forward if we build a society not defined by division but by unity, stability, and shared progress,” he said.
The property, often referred to as the “Blue Revolution Ground,” was a symbolic hub for the CDC since its founding in 2004 by former President George Weah. It served as the site for numerous rallies, protests, and political events that defined the party’s rise from a grassroots movement to the ruling party in 2017.
The eviction came after years of legal disputes over the property’s ownership. While some critics have accused the ruling Unity Party government of politically targeting the opposition, authorities have maintained that the action was carried out strictly based on a court mandate.
Analysts say the CDC’s calm response prevented potential unrest and demonstrated political maturity at a critical time in the nation’s political history. Coleman’s praise highlights the significance of the party’s reaction, which observers believe could set a precedent for how future political and legal disputes are handled.
