MONROVIA, LIBERIA – July 3, 2025 – The Free Port of Monrovia has marked a pivotal moment in Liberia’s economic trajectory with the official launch of night-time sailing and the commissioning of modern port equipment. These advancements are set to transform the nation’s trade capabilities, boost efficiency, and solidify its position as a regional commerce hub.
The Honorable Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. delivered a statement acknowledging the efforts of the National Port Authority (NPA) and its partners. “I bring you warm greetings from His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr, President of the Republic of Liberia, whose vision for economic transformation remains unquestionable,” Koung stated, emphasizing the President’s recognition of the port’s role as the “gateway to our thriving economy.”
For generations, the Free Port of Monrovia has stood as a cornerstone of national growth. As Liberia’s largest and busiest port, it manages over 80% of the country’s trade, facilitating essential imports and exports. The port serves as a crucial link to global trade routes, fosters commerce, and acts as a beacon for job creation and private sector development.
“Our government recognizes that a strong and efficient port system is essential to national development,” Koung affirmed. He highlighted the government’s commitment, under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), to continually improve port infrastructure, ensure transparency, and adhere to global compliance standards. “Let it be known that the port is the heartbeat of our economy which carries the possibilities for improving the private sector and lifting thousands of Liberians out of poverty.
The commissioning of the new equipment and the commencement of night-time sailing are more than just operational adjustments; they are “bold symbols of progress, readiness, and our collective commitment to positioning Liberia as a regional hub for trade and commerce,” Koung explained.
The modern equipment will significantly reduce vessel turnaround time and enhance both safety and service delivery at the port, directly contributing to Liberia’s economic competitiveness and its integration into global markets. “This investment sends a strong message: Liberia is ready and open for business,” Koung declared. “We are modernizing our port infrastructure to meet global standards, attract investment, and support the growth of both local and international industries.”
The introduction of night-time sailing is a monumental step for Liberia’s maritime sector. For the first time in many years, vessels can now enter and exit the Free Port of Monrovia around the clock. This translates to enhanced port productivity, 24-hour operations, reduced shipping costs, and improved regional competitiveness.
Koung acknowledged that these achievements were not solitary efforts. “We could not achieve this alone!” he stated, crediting the leadership and staff of the National Port Authority, as well as partners in the maritime and logistics sectors, for believing in the vision of a sustainable, job-creating economy.
Looking ahead, the port plans to introduce Advanced Cargo Declarations (ACD) and Time Release Services (TRS) to further streamline operations and boost efficiency.
“As we celebrate today, let us also remember that this is not the finish line, but a new beginning,” Koung concluded. He urged continued efforts in building, innovating, and investing in the infrastructure vital for economic advancement and improved livelihoods for all Liberians. “Together, let us sail into a future where Liberia’s ports are the true drivers of our economy. I encourage all port users to take advantage of this 24-hour service and terminal operations.”
With these words, the night-time sailing operations at the Free Port of Monrovia were officially launched, marking a new chapter for Liberia’s trade and development.
