Monrovia, March 23, 2026: The attention of the Liberia CSOs Coalition on Migration is drawn to recent action of Guinean soldiers crossing into Liberia’s territory along the Makona river, hoisting the Guinean flag on land within Liberia’s territory, raising serious concerns over territorial integrity and national security.
The situation led to the displacement of thousands of Liberians in Sorlumba, Lofa County, many of whom are now without homes and struggling to find alternative places to live.
The action of the Guinean military caused forced and vulnerable migration of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), children, pregnant women, students, elders and others, losing all their belongings, including livestock, farms and their homes.
Meanwhile, the coalition is calling on both governments to observe and respect AU protocol on migration, and at the same time calling on African countries to ratify the protocol for co-existence.
In accordance with the AU protocol adopted in 2018, it is important to protect the rights and the lives of all migrants regardless of their status in the host country.
The protocol seeks to advance regional integration to allow the free flow of goods and people in the sub- region to foster development, as the Protocol is part of the bigger plan to turn the continent into one of ‘seamless borders’ with the introduction of a single passport allowing free movement between countries.
The coalition is calling on both countries to carefully and peacefully resolve the border crises to avoid more forced and vulnerable migration of over 10,000 residents from 13 towns and villages.
Also, in recent times. Demolition in some communities in Montserrado County, Liberia, by the Liberia National Police on court eviction order, caused forced and vulnerable migration of residents, including hardship for the disabled, elderly, youths, and children who were in school, as they no longer have hope to continue their education.
According to the release signed by Sam M. Nimely, the Focal Person, the coalition considered the action of the court and the failure of the Liberian government to intervene as inhumane and ill-treatment of residents, as they almost lost all their belongings without putting in place a proper mechanism for their decent migration to other places.
Additionally, the coalition is calling on the Ghanaian government to investigate the recent death of a Liberian who was beaten to death by a mob.
The Liberia CSOs coalition is a network of CSOs in Liberia, working in the area of migration, committed to ensuring safe migration through advocacy, sensitization, research, outreach, capacity building, and data sharing.
