In observing of this day, the Liberian leader, The President Dr. George Manneh Weah has by Proclamation declared Monday, August 24, 2020 as a national holiday.
The eleven stripes symbolize the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence and the red and white symbolize courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the first independent republic in Africa, above the blue square representing the African continent.
The Liberian flag was ‘designed’ by the following seven women: Susannah Lewis, Matilda Newport, Rachel Johnson, Mary Hunter, J.B. Russwurm, Conilette Teage, and Sara Dripper. These seven women were born in America.
The flag was first raised on August 24, 1847, now known as Flag Day, and it was retained after the annexation of Maryland in 1857.
