An incident involving a firearm during the July 17, 2026 protest near the Executive Mansion has sparked intense public debate and heightened tensions between the Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) protest movement and Liberian state security.
Videos and photographs circulating on social media showing STAND Chairman Mulbah K. Morlu holding up a firearm at the protest grounds have prompted widespread public concern. The visual evidence has triggered urgent calls for a comprehensive investigation into the origin of the weapon and the exact circumstances under which it emerged during the demonstration.
Speaking after the protest, Morlu claimed that the firearm was taken from an unidentified infiltrator whom he alleged had been deployed to disrupt the peaceful gathering. He maintained that alert protesters successfully disarmed the individual before any violence could break out. However, Morlu has not publicly identified the alleged suspect, nor has he presented the individual to the media or law enforcement authorities. The lack of independent evidence to verify this account has left many questions unanswered and fueled intense speculation among Liberians regarding the weapon’s true origin.
While some political observers have characterized the July 17 demonstration as one of the weakest protests organized under Morlu’s leadership, the primary focus remains on the security breach. Morlu continues to insist that the armed individual was sent to provoke chaos, and that the demonstration organizers acted responsibly by confiscating the weapon before the situation escalated.
As of publication, state authorities have not confirmed Morlu’s allegations. Instead, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has declared Morlu “armed and dangerous,” stating that its investigation remains ongoing. The LNP alleges that the weapon in question is a police-issued firearm that was unlawfully seized from an officer during the protest scuffle and remains in Morlu’s possession.
Citing credible intelligence that the firearm could be used for unlawful purposes, the LNP has ordered the STAND Chairman to immediately surrender the weapon to the nearest police station or recognized law enforcement authority. Furthermore, police leadership has instructed officers not to confront Morlu alone, directing them to notify the nearest command center to ensure that any potential apprehension is executed in strict accordance with Liberian law and police procedures. Authorities have also appealed to the public for credible information regarding the location of the firearm or Morlu’s whereabouts, while warning citizens against attempting to intercept him due to the safety risks involved.
For his part, Morlu strongly denies the unlawful possession charge. He reiterates that the weapon was simply recovered from an unknown individual to secure the protest space and was never intended for his personal use, directly contradicting the police command’s assertion that he is actively withholding a government sidearm.
The clashing narratives between the STAND leadership and the Liberia National Police have intensified demands for an independent, transparent investigation. Observers emphasize that only a verified independent inquiry can conclusively establish how the firearm reached the Executive Mansion transit zone, determine whether it belonged to a police officer or an outside actor, and hold the responsible parties accountable under the law.
