The Revolutionary National Youth League of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has vehemently condemned what it terms the arbitrary arrest, politically motivated charges, and illegal incarceration of its chairman, Janga Kowo. The league also denounced the detention of former Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and other opposition leaders by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, labelling them as “enemies of the state.”
In a strongly worded release, the Youth League described President Boakai as a tyrant who aims to silence opposition leaders. The release stated, “Mr. Boakai should be reminded that our history has a place for those who adopt tyrannical garments to eliminate opposition leaders. We assure him that he will be one of the shining examples of how the Liberian people have brought tyrants to their knees, leaving them to rot in the consequences of their actions.”
The Youth League has also called on its partisans to “reciprocate any attack” against them and their leaders. They urged supporters to identify the homes of police officers responsible for what they called “injustice and brutality” against their chairman and leaders. “We declare today to you comrades that the Liberia National Police and Mr. Boakai are the enemies of the state,” the Youth League intimated. “As those police officers carry out Mr. Boakai’s instruction to torture opposition leaders, we want to admonish you that their families also live in the various communities with us, and they should also feel the consequences of the undemocratic actions of their husbands who prioritize tyranny over democracy. Identify their homes and the homes of those corrupt Unity Party officials and let us reciprocate the injustices meted against us.”
This statement comes in the wake of rising tension in Monrovia following the arrest and subsequent incarceration of former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and other lawmakers in connection with the alleged arson attack on the Capitol in December 2024. As tension mounts in Monrovia, this call by the Youth League for mass community actions is concerning, and the planned civil disobedience in various communities in the coming days could potentially lead to widespread unrest.
