The political leader of the All Liberian Party (ALP), Benoni Wilfred Urey has publicly asserted that the last elections held which brough the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) to power was what he called a ‘Selection, and not Election.
The All Liberian Party (ALP) is one of the constituent parties of the four Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) which includes the Alternative National Congress (ANC), the Liberty Party (LP), and the Unity Party (UP) – it can be recalled the four on February 21, 2019, consummated a collaborative document to forge a common front in the political processes of the country.
The collaborative document signed under the captioned “Statement of Commitment” was geared towards working together collective to democratically unseat the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) led-government of President George Manneh Weah in future elections due to “massive suffering, corruption, accumulation of wealth by the President to the detriment of the Liberian people, bad governance, disrespect for the rule of law,” among others.
The document was signed at the headquarters of the former governing Unity Party in Congo Town, outside Monrovia.
Leaders of the opposition political parties who affixed their signatures to the document included: Mr. Alexander B. Cummings (ANC), former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai (UP), Benoni Urey (ALP) and Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine (LP), now deceased.
2017 Election
Howbeit, on October 10, 2017, Liberia held its general elections, with former footballer George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) accumulating 38.4 percent of the vote while Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party (UP) accumulated 28.8 percent – with neither reaching an outright majority of the votes (51 percent), for which a run-off election was held on December 26, 2017, between the two candidates. And Mr. George Weah was pronounced by the National Elections Commission of Liberia the winner on December 28, 2017, with 61.5 percent of the total votes cashed.
But, speaking in an interview with journalists in Gbarnga, Bong County on October 22, 2021, after the crossing over ceremony of former Bong County defeated senatorial candidate, Mohammed A. Nasser to the All Liberian Party, the political leader of the ALP said the 2017 elections wasn’t an election, on ground that President George M. Weah was selected – and that, according to him the presidential election was not free, fair and transparent
Benoni Wilfred Urey’s party (ALP) according to the NEC got 24,246 votes (1.6%) in the 2017 general and presidential elections. Mr. Urey has alleged that the elections were manipulated by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
