The House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia has taken steps to recall its representatives at the ECOWAS Parliament, citing concerns over the selection process and adherence to ECOWAS protocols.

The request, raised during the session on Thursday, 13 February by Hon. James Kolleh (Bong County, District #2) and Hon. Johnson Williams (River Gee County, District #3), calls for the immediate withdrawal of Liberia’s current representatives in the regional legislative body.

The lawmakers outlined the following concerns:

1. The representatives were unilaterally selected rather than elected through a transparent process.

2. The composition of Liberia’s delegation failed to reflect ECOWAS’s principle of equal political representation among member states.

3. The selection process violated ECOWAS protocols governing parliamentary representation.

During deliberations, some lawmakers proposed that the ECOWAS Parliament should first be officially informed of Liberia’s decision, allowing for the declaration of the seats as vacant. This would pave the way for a transparent election process to select new representatives by ECOWAS rules and the House of Representatives regulations.

Currently, Liberia is represented by Bong County Electoral District 6 Representative Hon. Moima Briggs-Mensah, Nimba County Electoral District 9 Representative Hon. Taa Wongbe, and Montserrado County Electoral District 6 Representative Hon. Samuel Enders

The plenary has scheduled the election of new representatives for next Thursday, pending formal communication to ECOWAS regarding the recall.

The House of Representatives remains committed to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that Liberia’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament is selected through a fair and inclusive process.
