EDITORIAL: We Applaud University Of Liberia For Memorializing The Late Veteran Liberian Journalist Philip N. Wesseh

RECENTLY, OCTOBER 28, 2022, the Managing Editor of the independent Inquirer Newspaper, Philip N. Wesseh was laid to rest following a well packed funeral attended by hundreds of mourners including the former Liberian Vice President, Ambassador Joseph N. Boakai, the Liberian government represented by the Minister of Information, Ledgerhood Julius Rennie, the media community, and score of mourners.

IN ITS TRIBUTE to the fallen Liberian Journalists, the University of Liberia used the occasion to announce the establishment of Academic Excellence Journalism Award in memory of what they called “A statesman, illustrious Liberian and an icon of Print Journalism in Liberia, Mr. Philip N. Wesseh”, echoed that the fallen media hero, an alumnus and a part-time instructor of the University of Liberia earned his BA degree in Mass Communication in 2002 and a LLB degree in Law. He practiced as a professional journalist for over 40 unbroken years and rose from reporter to managing editor.

THE UL AUTHORITY also said; indeed, he was one of the “academic stars” at the Department of Communication and Media Studies (formerly Department of Mass Communication) having demonstrated his ability to perform, achieve and meaningfully excel in scholastic activities, evidenced by achieving high grades and superior performance in his class.

THE ANNUAL AWARD: “Philip N. Wesseh Academic Excellence Journalism Award” has been established in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia. Annually, the Dean of the College will bestow on student who academically perform, achieve high distinction and excel in scholastic works the “Philip N. Wesseh Academic Excellence Journalism Award”.

WE APPLAUD AUTHORITY of the University for its farsightedness for memorizing our fallen colleague, and overwhelmed for the level of togetherness at the state-owned University of Liberia amongst its faculty members which was exhibited during the funeral service of  PNW of Gina as he was affectionately called.
