The long awaited national convention of the former ruling party, the Unity Party (UP) has finally ended in Gbarnga, Bong County or central Liberia with several new faces being elected to steer the affairs of the party in 2023.
According to report, the party’s political leader, Ambassador Joseph Nyanma has overwhelmingly been reelected as the political leader of the party during the 2023 general and presidential elections.
Business man Amin Modad who served as party Chairman and Mohammed Ali – National Secretary lost their jobs to little known contestants for the positions.
In the last three years, the opposition UP, led by former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, has been in a “political tailspin” with missteps in holding with the opposition bloc known as the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), money woes, and the spectacle of party leader Mr. Boakai testifying in a court case against another opposition leader Mr. Alexander B. Cummings of the Alternative National Congress (ANC).
Discontent had been rising among UP partisans over the poor national profile of the party with many delegates seeing the just ended national convention as an opportunity to offload those they perceived as “ineffective and embattled”, according to a top source at the party’s headquarters in Monrovia who spoke to African Star on Saturday on condition of anonymity.
The new UP Chairman is Rev. Luther Tarpeh and National Secretary Amos Tweh. Madam Cornelia Kruah -Togba was elected, unopposed, as Vice Chairman for Inter-Party Affairs.
The new national leaders will run the day-to-day affairs in conjunction with party leader Mr. Boakai
The UP is expected to field Mr. Boakai as a candidate in next year’s Presidential contest against incumbent President George M. Weah who is expected to seek a second six year term.
The new UP national leadership is expected to rebuild the party political and campaign machinery, build new political alliances, and raise millions of dollars between now and election in 2023 in order to be competitive or even win state power again, according to our Correspondent in Monrovia.
The UP is expected to formally announce and introduce its slate of new national leaders soon.
