Boris Johnson has agreed to resign as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister as he finally caved to pressure to leave

He spoke to Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady on Thursday morning and agreed to stand down, with a new Tory leader set to be in place by the party conference in October.

But this date has been heavily opposed by Tory MPs.

Mr Johnson had remained defiant after Cabinet heavyweights Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid quit on Tuesday, and was determined to plough on in the face of mounting opposition.

But on Thursday morning Mr Johnson concluded the game was up, as eight fresh resignations came and more Cabinet loyalists urged him to quit.

Some senior Tories are already pushing for Mr Johnson to step down immediately and hand over to an interim prime minister in what would be an unprecedented constitutional move.
