The debate on whether pastors should be wealthy is as old as religion itself. There is a consensus that pastors ought to live a moderate life devoid of worldly pleasures so that they set a good example for their flock. It is perceived that spiritual and material wealth can never go hand in hand for Christians, a belief that real wealth is to be found in heaven.

That notwithstanding, it is not true to say that wealth can get in the way of pastors doing their job. Some wealthy pastors are righteous and set an excellent example for their flock. There are also wealthy pastors whose character is questionable and thus cannot be trusted to lead their congregation to spiritual nourishment.
