The Solicitor General of the Republic of Liberia, Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephas has publicly threatened media institutions with the seizure of their equipment if they continue to report what he called ‘Fake News’ on the Liberian presidency on its platforms.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, Cllr. Cephas in a rather emotional mood said the Liberian Government is constrained to take such action, noting that the publishing of fake news in Liberia has become rampant, a situation he described as ‘unbearable’, and further vowed to deal with any media institution for that matter.
Few days ago, the social media platform was flooded with news that the Liberian leader, President George Weah had been tested positive of the COVID-19, and that it was being conceived by authority, a report which has angered the Liberian Solicitor General to publicly issued threats against the Liberian media.
The SG further said any owner of media institution involve in the spreading of fake news will also be prison until the end of the deadly COVID-19 crisis.
