LIBERIA: ‘Free Thinkers’ Call For Immediate Halt To CBL Governor Patray’s Retirement Benefit

L/R: CBL Governor, Partary and Free Thinkers’ Morris Swen

In the wake of the announcement of the overhaul of the leadership of the Central Bank of Liberia by President George Manneh Weah in an effort to restore confidence in an institution that has been beset by scandals that is hampering efforts to deal with economic crisis coupled with a major lapse of control, a situation that has questioned the ability of the current leadership of the CBL to effectively revamp its internal mechanism to provide greater accountability and professionalism, the Free Conscious Independent and Objective Thinkers of Liberia are calling for an immediate halt to the payment of retirement package to CBL Executive Governor Hon. Nathaniel Patray, II pending the final conclusion of ongoing Liberia Anti Corruption Commission(LACC) investigation into  circumstances that characterized the US$25M Mop Up exercise.

The Free Conscious Independent and Objective Thinkers of Liberia in a press statement issued today, July 18, 2019, and signed by its Chairman, Morris A. S. Swen, Sr., said it is using this medium to state unequivocally that the unconventional manner and form the US$25M was handled by the Central Bank of Liberia clearly suggest reasonably that Hon. Nathaniel Patray, II being the Chief Executive Officer of the Central Bank of Liberia, who is to be responsible to the Board of Governors for the implementation of policies and to be in charge of the day-to-day management of the CBL in keeping with part IV section 10, sub-section 2(a) of the CBL ACT must be denied the payment of a huge retirement package until his role into the US$25M Mop Up exercise is made clear.

The Free Conscious Independent and Objective Thinkers of Liberia wish to state categorically that it is unfair to pay huge retirement package to Governor Patray especially at this critical period of our country’s economy, and this is also a direct undermining of the pro-poor agenda which the US$25M Mop Up exercise was intended to enhance thereby easing the hardship of the MASSES whose decision at the ballot box in 2017 give birth to the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government.
