Bishop Jonathan Hart to Be Inducted as Archbishop Of West Africa Province On Sunday

Archbishop Jonathan B. Hart

The Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa will have a new primate on Sunday, March 3, 2019  when Archbishop Jonathan Hart, currently Bishop of Liberia and Archbishop of the internal province of West Africa, is installed as Archbishop of the entire West Africa province. The Church of the Province of West Africa has two internal provinces: Ghana, covering the dioceses in that country; and West Africa, covering dioceses in The Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cameroun. Archbishop Jonathan will succeed Archbishop Daniel Sarfo as leader of the Province.

Archbishop Jonathan was consecrated Bishop of Liberia on 2 March 2008 and elected leader of the internal province in May 2014. Anglicans have been present in Liberia since 1836. Until 1982, the Anglican Church in Liberia was a missionary diocese of the US-based Episcopal Church. In November 1981 TEC’s Executive Council agreed to Liberia’s request to become part of the Province of West Africa; and the transfer took place on 18 March 1982. Archbishop Jonathan is the second Bishop of Liberia to have served as Archbishop and Primate of the Province of West Africa.

His installation as 11th Primate will take place at 10 am GMT on Sunday 3 March at the Trinity Cathedral in Monrovia.

Archbishop Jonathan Hart will continue to serve as Bishop of Liberia and head of the internal province of West Africa. In addition to his role as Bishop of Liberia, Archbishop Jonathan is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Cuttington University in Suacoco, Liberia, where he previously graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Cuttington; having obtained a Master’s Degree in Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School in Massachusetts, US.

Archbishop Jonathan has served as Head of the Inter-Religious Council and President of the Liberia Council of Churches.

“This is an historic occasion for the Church in Liberia and Episcopalians and people of faith and from government and the private sector are expected”, Provincial Secretary Anthony Eiwuley said. “Already several West African Bishops have begun arriving.”
