HAMILTON — A New Jersey woman was shot twice in the head last week in Guatemala while visiting family on vacation with her husband and it is unclear when she will be able to return home as she continues to recover at a hospital.

James and Sara Inman, of Hamilton, Mercer County, were riding in a car with her brother on Sept. 19 when attackers ran the car off the road and opened fire for an unknown reason, James Inman said Monday.

Sara Inman was rushed to a hospital in Guatemala City after the ambush. James Inman said he struggled to communicate with doctors, because of a language barrier.

“My wife was my translator, my rock and my world,” he said of his wife of 20 years.

Inman visited the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City, where workers provided contacts and information. They also suggested he start a GoFundMe account, which he called Saving Sara, to help offset the growing daily cost of his wife’s care.
