Authorities probe fatal shooting on Newark’s West Side

NEWARK — A 27-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday on the city’s West Side, police said.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., city police responded to reports of shots fired at Springfield Avenue and South 20th Street, where officers found Del Roberts, Jr., of Irvington, suffering from gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Roberts was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:16 p.m., Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Task Force, which includes Newark police detectives, is investigating the homicide.
