BAYONNE — The man who was shot by police on Friday evening had broken into a woman’s home and threatened her with a knife and screwdriver, according to authorities.
Rudy Vera, 51, remains hospitalized and faces a dozen charges, including violating a restraining order the victim had against him, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.
On Friday at about 5:30 p.m., Bayonne police were called to East 25th Street for a “domestic violence incident.” When officers arrived, Vera was standing in the street with a knife in his hand, Suarez said.
Vera started “acting in an aggressive manner” toward police, who ordered him to drop the knife multiple times, according to authorities. The 51-year-old threatened one of the officers with the knife and then police shot him twice, including once in the torso, authorities said.
