As Liberians anxiously looking forward to have a successful and transparent elections come October 10, 2017, political parties and their political leaders are showing optimism of their election as the country’s group of leaders to rule Liberia.
One of such political parties is Liberia’s oldest opposition United People’s Party (UPP) which now threatening the path to successfully succeed the UP led Government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the poll where over 20 political parties are contesting.
The man who is heading this opposition party, and hoping to ascend to the presidency of Liberia in the October poll is one of Liberia’s renown businessman, and a politician, Mr. Macdonald A. Wento who has expressed optimism of taking Liberia to the next level when elected.
The second of 10 children, was born on December 13, 1967 his father, Alexander G. Wento, Sr., a founding member of the Progressive Alliance of Liberia (PAL), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the United People’s Party (UPP) hailed from John David’s Town, Putu Statutory District, Grand Gedeh County, while his mother, Madam Theresa Nyenswah, who also hailed from Greenville City, Sinoe County, is a father of eight children, and married to Michelle Dennis.
During the past 10 years, ‘Mac’ he is affectionately call, has added 8 businesses to the Liberian economy with a potential to provide some 5,000 job opportunities. At present, he has more than 1,500 employees, and has three concession agreements with the Liberian government, making him second to no other Liberian concessionaire in the country.
Two of the concessions, the International Consultant Capital and Geblo Lodging Incorporated are for 25 years each with these entities, Mr. Wento owns a majority share in the New Millennium Oil & Gas Company, which has a 50-year concession life span. These concessions are offering Liberians income opportunities in Nimba, Sinoe, Rivercess, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, and Montserrado counties.
In 2007, Mac Wento founded the Liberia Wood Industry, a Sawmill based in Brewerville, Montserrado County, which launched several of his companies on a successful course. Some of these companies are: International Construction Enterprise, founded 2013; the Liberia Tropical Wood Industry – a European-Liberian finished wood and metal products – established 2015; and the Infinite Oil and Gas Service Provider, started in 2014. Presently, Mac is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of NIMACKS, a venture capital management company, based in Monrovia.
Mac is a trained Investment Banker. In 1991, he successfully completed professional training in Currency Trading at International Consultant Capital in Madrid, Spain. As a currency trader in creative finance, Mac worked for International Consultant Capital in Zug, Switzerland. In 1992 and 1993, Mac Wento received advanced training in Banking, Finance and Leadership in Zug, Switzerland.
An entrepreneur by nature, Mac in 1994, established and operated Wedge Impex, a sole proprietorship, which imported and exported various commodities between Spain and Africa. Later, in 1996, he became Director of Trade and Investment for International Consultant Capital. In this role, Mac managed 120 professional currency traders.
In 2000, Mac Wento served as Managing Director of Inforex in Ancona, Italy, where he managed a currency trading portfolio and credit line of nearly three billion United States Dollars.
As political leader and presidential candidate of the oldest opposition political party of Liberia, the UPP, ‘Mac’ is also a grassroots organizer and a dedicated member of the progressive camp in Liberian politics. He is the founding Chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
In 2014, Mac studied Governance, Government and Leadership at COSTRA, Accra, Ghana. Mac Wento is a Christian and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bethel World Outreach Ministries.
In 2006, he established the Wento Foundation, which at present provides scholarships to more than 200 Liberian students pursuing studies in various disciplines at institutions in Liberia. Mac speaks five international languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French and German. He has traveled to more than 100 capitals around the world.
In August 2016, Mac Wento returned to his political roots, the United People’s Party. And on October 1, 2016, he was elected Standard Bearer at the 5th National Party Congress of the United People’s Party to contest the Liberian Presidency in 2017.
One of Wento’s top priorities is reforming the education system so that young people acquire job skills and be able to compete for better paying jobs in the domestic and global economy of the future.
MacDonald Wento is a Christian and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bethel World Outreach Ministries. He is deeply involved in community and civic affairs, extensively supporting the construction of churches and contributing to numerous charitable organizations.
In 2006, he established the Wento Foundation, which is rewarding talented youths scale up their knowledge in music and academic works. The Foundation has awarded tuition-free scholarships to more than 200 deserving Liberian students who are realizing their educational dreams at various institutions of learning across the nation.
The UPP Standard Bearer places emphasis on strengthening the church to become the moral compass of our society and to serving as an important new intervention for struggling families trying to keep the basic unit of society― the family, vibrant.
Prior to entering politics, Wento enjoyed a successful career helping businesses grow and improve their operations. From 2000 to 2002, he established Wedge Impex, a sole proprietorship, engaged in the import and export of various commodities in Madrid, Spain. In 2002, he started a career in currency trading in creative finance in Zug, Switzerland.
In Spain, he served as Executive Trader and subsequently became Director of Trade and Investment for International Consultant Capita, 2002-2004. In this role, Wento managed 120 professional currency traders. From 2004 – 2005, Wento worked in Acona, Italy as Managing Director of Inforex and managed a portfolio of about US$3 billion credit line.
