North Korea warned it would not cave in to Donald Trump ’s demands over missile tests, sparking fears that a devastating war with the US was only a matter of time.
As the American president’s warships headed to the region amid claims he was set to launch a pre-emptive strike, capital Pyongyang threatened to blitz American targets with nuclear attacks.
North Korea ’s only ally China pleaded with the two sides to pull back from the brink of war and even US rival Russia appealed for calm as the world slid dangerously towards a conflict that would have catastrophic effects.
But dictator Kim Jong-un threatened to “ravage” US attackers and warned that their military bases and “the headquarters of evil” in South Korea would be “pulverised within a few minutes”.
A statement from North Korea said: “Our toughest counteraction against the US and its vassal forces will be taken in such a merciless manner as not to allow the aggressors to survive.”
