Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee called on Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch on Tuesday to investigate Donald J. Trump’s $25,000 contribution in support of Florida’s attorney general, saying it “may have influenced” her decision not to pursue a complaint against Trump University.
The request for a federal investigation comes as Democrats try to seize on the 2013 episode to raise ethical doubts about the Republican nominee in the final stretch of the presidential campaign. There has been renewed interest in the donation since Mr. Trump’s campaign disclosed this month that he paid a $2,500 penalty to the Internal Revenue Service because the contribution was sent from his nonprofit foundation, in violation of tax regulations.
