The Liberia National Police (LNP) through the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has finally released results of investigations into the deaths of Harry Greaves and Victoria Zayzay, a press release signed by Deputy Information Minister Isaac Jackson has said.

On October 20, 2015, the death of Victoria Zayzay was reported while she was briefly detained in the female holding cell at the Zone 6 Police Depot 1 Substation pending court action. But she was later discovered hanging unconsciously on the cell gate, strangled with a lappa around her neck.

The LNP investigation has established that the death of Victoria Zayzay was not as a result of homicide, but that the deceased committed suicide.

The final report of the autopsy conducted on the body of the Late Victoria Zayzay on February 8, also concludes that Victoria died as a result of asphyxiation (to deprive any living thing of oxygen, or be deprived of oxygen), usually leading to unconsciousness or death by hanging; and that there is no physical or forensic evidence that the deceased was physically assaulted around the time of her death.

As for Mr. Harry A. Greaves, he reportedly left his home on January 29, and two days later, on the morning of January 31, his lifeless body was found on the beach behind the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The police investigation together with the final report of the autopsy conducted on the body of Mr. Greaves on February 8, established that the cause of death is as a result of asphyxiation (deprived of oxygen) by salt water drowning.

Therefore, the release said, the conclusion of police investigations and the autopsy report are also consistent with findings of the Special Investigating Team from the United States of America. The US team concluded that Mr. Harry Greaves died by drowning.

The final, comprehensive report from the US Team has yet to be publicly released. After performing their tests on the corpse the late Greaves earlier this year, the US pathologists released a preliminary report, promising to submit a comprehensive report in due course. In a phone interview

yesterday, Minister Jackson told  reporter that the US Team had submitted the full copy of their final report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but said the Solicitor General of Liberia, Cllr. Betty Lamin Blamo, released the findings above to the Ministry of Information.

Up to press time, Cllr. Blamo did not respond to calls and a text message requesting further information.

“The Government of Liberia is bringing closure to the matter by announcing the findings,” Minister Jackson said.

“The Government of Liberia (GOL), meanwhile, reiterates its regrets over the loss of Ms. Zayzay and Mr. Greaves and once more expresses sympathy to the Zayzay and Greaves families,” a GOL press statement signed by Deputy Minister Jackson noted.
