MONROVIA- A group of 109 students from the Agricultural College of the United Methodist University in Gbazon Town, Juarzon Statutory District, Sinoe County are currently benefiting from vacation jobs provided by Golden Veroleum Liberia over a period of two months in Sinoe and Grand Kru Counties. The students are assigned to suitable job roles in Butaw, Kpanyan Tarjuowon, Tartweh and Nitrain in Sinoe and in Sorroken, Wadabo and Garraway in Grand Kru County.
According to GVL’s Communications Coordinator Leroy Kanmoh, GVL seeks to help students practicalize what is been taught in the classrooms and prepare them financially for the next semester. Mr. Kanmoh said, the students who are benefiting from GVL vacation jobs are part of GVL annual scholarship contribution of US$100, 000.00 to the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Agriculture for students studying agriculture and other key subjects relevant to the successful operation of a major oil palm company.
Addressing the students at Wakefield in Butaw, Vigy Ponnudurai, executive vice president for operations at GVL urged the students to take their jobs seriously as their employment after graduation is based on performance, punctuality, honesty, sincerity and commitment during their vacation job period with GVL.
Dave Saywoo and Georgina Toe on behalf of their colleagues lauded Golden Veroleum Liberia for the significant role played in the enhancement of their capacity. Georgina Toe said “It is difficult for us to sustain our selves on campus but, with the provision of vacation jobs by GVL, we will now have some funds to do so, in addition to gaining valuable work experience”.
Earlier in May, GVL hired 28 graduates of United Methodist University College of Agriculture in Gbazon Town on six months contracts. All are assigned in Sinoe and Grand Kru. Every year, GVL releases directly into the local economies of Sinoe and Grand at least USD5.7 million in local worker wages. GVL currently employs 3,700 Liberians in Sinoe and Grand Kru counties and seeks to increase this number significantly and in line with its expansion plans in the coming years.
