{NY1 Online News} – PORTSMOUTH, NH – After holding back an endorsement for weeks, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Tuesday formally threw his support behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, saying she’s the only one who has what it takes to fix the “grotesque level of income and wealth inequality” in the country.

The White House rivals appeared together at a rally in New Hampshire where the veteran senator offered his congratulations.

“Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States,” Sanders said.

The endorsement comes more than a month after Clinton clinched enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination.

Sanders had been calling for Clinton to embrace a more progressive agenda before he endorsed her.

While addressing the crowd, Clinton said the two have been working together in recent weeks and thanked him for running a passionate campaign, adding he has “energized and inspired a new generation”.

In recent days, Clinton announced new policies on higher education and health care in a nod to Sanders’ campaign.

But those backing the Vermont Senator say Clinton needs to do more to get their support.

“If she wants to win over Bernie Sanders supporters, she has to start speaking to Bernie Sanders supporters. It’s not just about getting Elizabeth Warren on stage and all these progressive leaders on stage, including Bernie Sanders. It’s about speaking and listening to and connecting with the movements that make up the Democratic Party,” said Nomiki Konst, a Sanders supporter.

After the rally, Clinton is expected in New York City for a Broadway fundraiser performance of “Hamilton”.
