Hillary Clinton Slaughters Bernie Sanders in West Virginia with Non-Trump Voters

2thumb-8-300x202{NEW YORK} – Independent Vermont Senator and still-hanging-in-there Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is celebrating a fairly massive 15-point win in Tuesday night’s West Virginia Democratic primary, and he has one person to thank for that: Donald Trump. Without Donald Trump’s supporters voting for Bernie, Hillary Clinton would have won the state by a country mile, according to exit polls:

In November, Donald Trump would be the choice of 44 percent of West Virginia Democratic primary voters who supported Bernie Sanders Tuesday, CBS News early exit polling found.

But support for Trump in the general election is largely driven by independents who were allowed to vote in West Virginia’s Democratic primary. More than half would back Trump against either Hillary Clinton or Sanders.

Thirty-six percent of the Democratic primary voters are independents, compared to just 18 percent in 2008.

That result was fairly consistent, with NBC News putting the number of Trump supporters voting for Bernie at 39 percent. If you don’t include those Trump supporters, Hillary wins the state by over 16,000 votes and ten percentage points, and that’s even after her comments about coal were blown out of all context and proportion.
